May 1, 2025

The NURSING-AI Challenge is sponsored by the School of Nursing Dean’s Office and co-hosted by the Center for Healthcare Innovation and Technology Advancements (CHITA) and the Center for Professional Development and Scholarship (CPDS). This initiative seeks to connect School of Nursing faculty with innovative AI-driven solutions developed by graduate students and their faculty mentors from various campus units, including the McCombs School of Business, Department of Computer Science, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Information, and interdisciplinary research centers such as the Oden Institute and the Humanities Institute.

Avery Gilbert, a student in the School of Information on the Application Hosting and Delivery Team, has developed a prototype for an AI-powered hierarchical agent system designed to optimize nurse staffing and enhance patient care. The system features a Supervisor Agent that coordinates Specialized Agents responsible for shift scheduling, workload distribution, patient monitoring, and predictive analytics. These agents leverage real-time hospital data and machine learning techniques to improve resource allocation and address staffing needs proactively.

If selected, he will be invited to collaborate further with the School of Nursing to refine and develop a comprehensive solution package.

Mr. Gilbert will present his proposal to the School of Nursing Faculty.
